and Gourmet Mushrooms

Contact Person - Bob Beyfuss, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Greene County (518) 622 - 9820; rlb14@cornell.edu

The purpose of the project is to investigate the viability of producing several agroforestry crops within the Arnot Forest including ginseng, mushrooms, goldenseal, and several perennial, herbaceous ornamentals. Ten research plots will serve as demonstration and teaching sites for students, faculty and Cornell Cooperative Extension staff upon completion of the research projects. The project will involve identification of different forest types within the Arnot, identification and labeling of tree and understory species, collection of soil samples, site preparation and planting, data collection and analysis.

Prospective interns should have a basic knowledge of northeastern forest ecology and must be physically able to operate a chain saw, rototiller and wood chipper. Field activities will involve visiting a variety of forest sites, collecting ecological data, preparing mushroom cultures, preparing field sites, and collecting growth and production data from the agroforestry crops. Safety training will be provided.
