Assessing the Impacts of Deer on Forest Vegetation

Paul Curtis, Project Director, 607-255-2835, pdc1@cornell.edu
Gary Goff, Kristi Sullivan, and Peter Smallidge, Co-Directors

This is a continuing project to assess the combined effects of deer browsing and interfering vegetation on the regeneration of hardwood tree species.  The primary tasks will include data collection involving measurements of vegetation, deer censusing, and establishing experimental treatments.  Experimental treatments will required the establishment of several dozen fenced exclosures and brush removal.

Prior field experience would be useful and the intern must have the capacity to quickly learn to identify the common woody and herbaceous plant species present at the Arnot Forest.   The intern will need to work independently and must be able to collect accurate data.  Some data entry is expected, and the intern will likely have the opportunity to participate in related deer-vegetation research activities.  It would be helpful for the intern to have a valid NYS driver's license.
