Harry Blanchet is working with six cooperators in Warren, Crawford, Venango, Elk, Forest, and Clarion counties of Pennsylvania to conduct ginseng, goldenseal, and improved sugar maple trials.

One of Harry's cooperators is a private forest owner, who is theoretically retired. He manages his land with a number of objectives, including timber harvesting, reforestation, and demonstration plots for educational purposes. He is an active Tree Farmer, and is working on several Tree Farm projects. He is conducting ginseng and goldenseal trials on his land with the hopes of using them as demonstration plots.

Harry's second cooperator is also a retired private forest owner. He is actively involved in the North West Pennsylvania Land Owners Association, and he is reforesting part of his land with black cherry, black locust, red oak, and sugar maple. He would like to eventually establish a maple syrup operation on his land, and has established the improved sugar maple trial depicted on the left. He is also working with Harry to establish understory trials for use as demonstration plots.
Harry's third cooperator is a small farmer who runs a sugar maple operation on land he leases. He also raises exotic livestock and horses; he pastures other animals on his land; and cuts hay. In addition to this diverse variety of jobs, he is also an electrician, and retails local produce and value-added agricultural products, including maple products. His maple syrup operation makes him a knowledgeable candidate for the improved maple trials and he is interested to explore the potential of the improved trees. Harry is depicted adjusting a shelter around one of the trees (pictured on the right).

Harry's fourth cooperator is a semi-retired private forest owner. His property is presently under a long-term contract for sustainable forest development for timber and aesthetic purposes. Ginseng and goldenseal plots were established in this ground immediately following a light thinning of the area, to help examine the potential for establishment under these conditions. This cooperator is mainly interested in use of the site as a demonstration or test plot.

A fifth cooperator from Elk County recently joined the program with ginseng and goldenseal plots. This vegetable and beef farmer has established a small test plot in his woodlands. He is interested in additional income from these woodland resources.

A sixth cooperator in Forest County has also recently established an understory plot in woodlands adjacent to a traditional family dairy farm. The owner hopes to generate additional income from these properties.
