Beth Spaugh is working with two cooperators in Clinton and Essex counties in New York. She is also conducting her own ginseng trials on forested land owned by a friend (see photo below). She believes ginseng could be a future source of retirement funds, and she would like to use the trials in some of her extension activities.

Beth's first cooperator is small farm operator Rob Hastings. Rob raises organic vegetables and sells them at his own store. Additionally he produces maple syrup, raises chickens, and sells lamb and wool products. Rob has greenhouses that allow him to extend his growing season with tomatoes and bedding plants. Rob is conducting a ginseng trial in the hopes that the crop could evetually generate income. (See photo to the right.)

Beth's second cooperator is Audrey Light. Audrey and her husband are private forest owners. Audrey is a naturalist and makes Adirondack furniture, and her hsuband works as a carpenter. Audrey was already quite knowledgeable about wild ginseng and is hoping to turn her ginseng and goldenseal trials into an income generating activity if the plants are successful. She started her plants in a greenhouse (see photo on left) and then transplanted them into a wooded area.
