Agroforestry
Learning Communities
in the Northeast
2nd
Generation Activities

The
Agroforestry and Forest Management Workshop held at Cornell University's Arnot
Forest in April, 2001 shaped the second generation of the forest farming learning
community. The 32 participants came from seven states in the Northeast, the
majority from New York and Pennsylvania. Successful applicants demonstrated
commitments from small farm and private forest owners to establish and monitor
forest farming learning trails on their properties. While the focus of the initial
learning communities workshop was on understory crops, the main emphasis of
the Arnot Forest workshop was on crop tree management and sugar bush enhancement.
These activities include creating the conditions for effective understory cropping,
or intercropping, where there is ecological potential and economic incentive
to do so.
Eight
of the Arnot workshop participants were members of the learning community's
first generation, and established understory trials with landowners in Fall
2000. The tree crop management training should position this cohort to play
leading roles within the "community" in fostering understanding of methods and
challenges in forest farming.
