Agroforestry
Learning Communities
in the Northeast
|
The agroforestry and forest management learning community initiative aims to help sustain small farms and private woodland productivity. We seek to achieve these goals by improving the capacity of natural resource educators and landowners to develop woodland management practices that are adequately diverse, integrated, profitable, healthy and sustainable. Our learning community approach involves farmers, forest owners, educators and scientists in designing and assessing the performance of promising practices. It also uses common data recording methods to monitor key performance indicators under diverse conditions. |

Our
agroforestry approach to forest management is called forest farming. Forest
farming involves the intentional manipulation of forested lands to produce
food, medicinal or decorative products in addition to timber and firewood.
Forest crops with economic potential in the Northeast include the herbal
medicinal plants American ginseng (panex quinquefolium) and golden
seal (hydrastis canadensis), a variety of mushrooms and sugar maple
(acer saccharum) sap.
