PUBLIC MEETING - January 17, 2001, 7:30 PM, DeWitt Middle School

Residents of Cayuga Heights are encouraged to attend this public meeting.  The purpose of the meeting is to discuss deer-related problems and potential methods for reducing the size of the local population, and gather input from the citizens of Cayuga Heights. Presentations by a panel of wildlife professionals will be followed by questions and comments from the audience.  The Summary Report of the Cayuga Heights Deer Study Committee is being sent out for residents of the community to read prior to the meeting.  In addition, a 2-page Comparison of Deer Population Management Methods is available.

Through this site, we will provide up-to-date information about deer issues in Cayuga Heights, including upcoming meetings and Feasibility Study progress reports.

Help us document the number of deer present and their movements throughout Cayuga Heights.  If you see a marked deer, click on Deer Observation Form and let us know which deer you saw and where it was located at the time.  Your participation is a critical element of this study!

Feasibility Study Results and Updates

As of March 15, 2000, 50 deer had been fitted with ear tags and collars.  Eighteen adult does had been fitted with special radio collars so that their movements can be tracked.  Since that time, 13 of the tagged deer have been killed in vehicle accidents, 1 deer died of unknown causes out by the airport, 2 were killed outside of Cayuga Heights duing the hunting season, and 2 deer died of capture-related deaths.  Several other male deer have left Cayuga Heights, dispersing to nearby areas (Dryden Lake, Ithaca College, West Hill, Yellow Barn State Forest).  A camera survey was conducted again this fall to determine the potential for deer population growth in Cayuga Heights.  Results will be presented at the public meeting on January 17th.  For more information on the Feasibility Study click here.
