Stand By Your Stream is an outreach program focused on improving awareness of good streamside protection across New York. Educational resources have been developed to target audiences who have significant influences on streamsides, including non-industrial private landowners, farmers, town planners and zoning boards, and youth groups. Over the past year, we have provided two inservice trainings to build the capacity of Cornell Cooperative Extension educators to offer this program in their counties. Seminars on streamside protection have also been given to more than 1000 participants as part of fine Regional Rural Landowner Workshops delivered statewide in the past year.

Target Audiences

Non-Industrial private landowners:  Currently 90% of New York's landscape is forested
and the majority of these lands are owned by non-industrial, private landowners.
Farmers:  Farming practices are a major influence on erosion and non-point pollution in
                           streams and lakes.
Town planners and zoning boards:  Unlike wetlands which receive considerable protection
at the state and federal levels, streamside protection is the responsibility of
                            municipal and town governments.
Youth groups:  Youth groups are active in local streamside restoration efforts and a good
                           mechanism for communicating with adults.
