Marianne Krasny is a professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department Natural Resources. Her current work focuses on the intersection of science and environmental education and community action in urban environments in the US and internationally. Dr. Krasny works with a diverse group of graduate students who use community-based education programs in the US, South Africa, and other countries as a focus for their research.
Research
Dr. Krasny conducts research on: (1) community-based approaches to science education; (2) participatory educational program development and dissemination; and (3) models for integrating university outreach, research, and graduate and undergraduate student training.
Extension
Dr. Krasny heads up the National Science Foundation funded Garden Mosaics program, which integrates science learning with intergenerational mentoring, cultural understanding, and community action (www.gardenmosaics.org). Youth and elders participating in Garden Mosaics conduct research in urban community gardens to investigate the link between planting practices and immigrant and other cultures, and the role of community gardens as open space in urban neighborhoods. The program integrates the local knowledge of gardeners with scientific knowledge to create real and virtual learning environments for youth.
Currently, Dr. Krasny and her colleagues are creating a youth outreach and research initiative focused on the questions: What does it mean to be a global scientist? How can youth develop the motivation, understandings, and skills to become global scientists? This program will include global, web-mediated and local, community-based environments for youth to learn about and become part of international research teams working on agricultural biodiversity.
Dr. Krasny also is principal investigator for the Cornell Science Inquiry Partnerships, which provides fellowships for graduate students guiding secondary school students in inquiry learning in rural and urban schools (http://csip.cornell.edu).
