Ph.D - Cornell University - 1977
B.S. - East Tennessee State University - 1970

Charles Smith joined the Department of Natural Resources in 1992. He teaches undergraduate field biology courses and conducts research in applied ecology, addressing landscape-scale questions related to science-based conservation and management of migratory birds.

Research

Since 1992, Dr. Smith has coordinated the New York State Gap Analysis Project, in cooperation with multiple state and federal agencies. His research focuses upon biodiversity conservation and questions related to conservation of grassland birds and responses of northeastern breeding bird populations to habitat change and fragmentation. Breeding bird atlas and survey methods, geographic information systems (GIS), and satellite imagery are being used to address questions related to landscape-scale conservation of breeding bird diversity in the Hudson River Valley.
