M.S. - Cornell University, Natural Resources - 1980
B.A. - Hampshire College, Environmental Sciences - 1975
Nancy Trautmann serves as Director of Education at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, with the
goal of inspiring people of all ages to learn about birds and to care about conserving and restoring biodiversity in their home communities and throughout the world.
Her previous work includes directing Environmental
Inquiry, an NSF-funded curriculum development project aiming to enrich secondary science by engaging
students in authentic research. In 2000-2006, she also directed the Cornell Science Inquiry Partnerships,
an NSF Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) project in which Cornell graduate students
collaborated with middle and high school science teachers to design and implement inquiry-based lesson plans and student research projects.
Research
Nancy's research interests focus on various aspects of environmental science education and outreach:
- Potential roles of the Internet in supporting collaborative learning among students, teachers, and citizen scientists, including web-based peer review among student scientists,
- Professional development for secondary teachers interested in teaching science through analysis of environmental issues using geospatial technology,
- Techniques for
engaging students and teachers in scientific investigations and other
forms of inquiry-based learning,
- Effective methods of promoting environmental literacy and cultivating environmental appreciation and responsibility, and
- Design of university science
outreach to meet the needs of collaborating teachers and their students.
