Accomplishments this quarter:
(January 1-March 31, 2007)

• Processed data collected in Cornell lands survey—spatial analysis of respondents vs. non-respondents, development of scales and preliminary regression analysis.

• Finalized all Phase IIIA reports as HDRU publications and distributed to collaborators and primary interviewees.

• Phase IIIB survey approved by OMB. To be implemented in April.

• Shared manager’s concept map model with Blue Ridge Parkway as follow-up to August 2006 Technical Assistance visit re: wildlife management planning for deer issues.

• Participated in “Thinking Like a Manager” writing retreat.

• Members of planning committee for first Int’l Human Dimensions conference, to be held in 2008.

Dan's additional activities:

• Relocated to Fort Collins, CO to work with BRMD.

• Continued to work with BRMD to develop GWS conference session.

• Working with Greg Eckert on description of process to derive desired future conditions that integrates human dimensions consideration.

• Involved (with Margaret Wild) in group Glenn Plumb (YELL) pulled together for planning workshop to launch Yellowstone Wildlife Health Program.

• Initiated with Jerry Mitchell, Mike Mayer, and Margaret Wild an effort to develop some guidance for parks considering need for management of cervids requiring lethal removal of individuals or reduction of overall population.

• Prepared with Margaret Wild a prospectus for developing greater insight into the human dimensions of wildlife disease management with emphasis on proactive and anticipatory informative communication needs with respect to HPAI.

• Provided input to Linda Drees on unrestrained Native American dogs using Little Big Horn.

• Provided assistance to Natural Sounds program in identifying people interested in a position to assist parks and develop policy on the applied aspects of sound management in National parks.

• Working on development of an advising and training tool for assisting natural resource managers in articulating and analyzing the management environment in which they operate for specific programs (i.e., development of managers’ models—concept maps—that encourages a systematic approach to describing management systems and allows clarity in communication about such systems).

• Working with Margaret Wild, Shawn Riley and Kirsten Leong on abstracts for presentations at summer ’07 WDA and TWS conferences.

Kirsten's additional activities:

• Presented research at DNR GSA Symposium.

• Served as elected GPSA representative for DNR.

• Submitted manuscript “The Tragedy of Becoming Common” to ISSRM student paper competition

• Attended roll out meeting for HD.gov.

Next quarter plans: (April 1-June 30, 2007)

• Continue analysis of Cornell lands survey and present results to decision makers.

• Implement NPS mail survey (Phase IIIB—April).

• Attend BRMD retreat (May).

• Continue to serve as members of planning committee for first International Human Dimensions conference, to be held in 2008.

• Continue to develop manuscripts “Negotiating between resource conservation and the public trust on federal reserve lands” and “Introduction to human dimensions considerations in biological resource planning.”

• Reformat and submit “Community and Participation” paper to Environmental Management.

Dan's additional activities:

• Review Kisten’s dissertation and conduct B-exam.

• Continue work on all other activities listed above.

Kirsten's additional activities:

• Continue to serve as elected GPSA representative for DNR.

• Guest lecture for course Community Involvement in Environmental Decisions (April).

• Present research at George Wright Society biennial meeting (April).

• Complete draft of full dissertation.

• Complete B-exam (May).

• Present research to student chapter of TWS (May).

• Present research at ISSRM (June).
