Accomplishments this quarter:
(October 1-December 31, 2005)

Dan:

• Finalized HDW manuscript on wildlife disease management system model.

• Worked with authors and WSB editor on preparation of the special section of papers on wildlife habituation.

• Reviewed grant application for Delaware Water Gap.

Kirsten:

• Attended Deer Management EIS Round-table meeting Catoctin Mountain Park, Oct 4-6.

• Attended Deer in Your Backyard Symposium at Valley Forge, PA, Nov 12.

• Completed Phase IIIA research at:

• Valley Forge National Historical Park Oct 2-24

• Prince William Forest Park Oct 24-Nov 14.

• Processing of data collected in Phase IIIA research-interview transcription, reviewing transcribed interviews for accuracy, typing up observations and notes.

• Development of insights from Phase IIA research as examples of deer management as a "wicked" problem, presented at DKGS, Nov 28. To be modified for presentation at Society for Conservation Biology annual meeting in the June 2006.

• Drafted OMB proposal for mail survey to communities near parks.

Next quarter plans: (Januaray 1-March 31, 2005)

• Participate in BRMD strategic planning workshop in Ft Collins during January.

• Internal review for NPS of social science aspects of draft manuscript on Assessment of Hunting Impacts at New River Gorge National River, West Virginia.

Dan:

• Continue to work on habituation special section for WSB.

• Develop plan for helping BRMD with Tech Assistance Requests from Parks that have HD components.

• Plan extended summer visit to Acadia National Park to develop research plan for HD of deer management.

• Work with Great Cyprus Preserve and Everglades NP on black bear and panther issues, respectively, in collaboration with Florida Wildlife Conservation Division.

Kirsten:

• Attend NPS Chronic Wasting Disease workshops and policy meeting, January.

• Attend planning meeting for Human Dimensions conference as NPS representative, February.

• Analysis of Phase IIIA data (transcribed interviews and participant observation).

• Apply for Phase IIIB (mail survey) UCHS human subjects and OMB approval.

• Administer mail survey to residents of communities near parks.

• Submit "Community and Participation" manuscript to the Wildlife Society Bulletin.

• Continue to develop manuscripts "Deer management-a wicked/wild wildlife problem," "Negotiating between resource conservation and the public trust on federal reserve lands," and "Toward a theory of coorientation to inform public engagement strategies"
