Accomplishments this quarter:
(October 1-December 31, 2006)

• Solicited and received input from NPS managers and interviewees on draft reports from Phase IIIA research for FIIS and VAFO.

• 30-day draft Notice of Intent for implementation of mail survey (Phase IIIB) and final approval package submitted to OMB.

• Both Dan and Kirsten served on planning committee for first International Human Dimensions conference, to be held in 2008.

• Submitted manuscript “Matching the Forum to the Fuss: Using Coorientation Contexts to Address the Paradox of Public Participation in Natural Resource Management” for consideration for publication in Environmental Practice.

• Developed draft report for Blue Ridge Parkway based on August Technical Assistance visit re: wildlife management planning for deer issues.

• Implemented mail survey for Cornell lands and surrounding communities, an analogous situation to that faced by parks.

Dan's additional activities:

• Worked with BRMD to develop GWS conference session and participate on panel concluding the session.

• Served as advisor NR Program Center on ideas for questions to propose for the comprehensive public survey.

• Worked with ACAD staff on paper describing the deer management and research system for ACAD, and its utility for surfacing and communicating important elements of management.

• Further developed plans for joining BRMD during sabbatical leave, beginning March 2007.

Kirsten's additional activities:

• Attended first organizational meeting of the Human Wildlife Conflict Collaboration.

• Continued processing data collected in Phase IIIA research—interview transcription, reviewing transcribed interviews for accuracy, coding data in ATLAS.ti.

• Developed manuscript on HD considerations and media content analysis for NPS Chronic Wasting Disease regional EIS discussions.

• Reviewed manuscript for the special issue of Journal of Park & Recreation Administration on Issues Confronting the Management of Urban-proximate Natural Resource Recreation Areas.

• TA for NTRES 330 Natural Resources Planning and Management.

• Served as elected GPSA representative for DNR.

• Served as member of DNR search committee for HD faculty position.

Next quarter plans: (January 1-March 31, 2006)

• Complete PRWI Phase IIIA report and invite review by interviewees.

• Finalize all Phase IIIA reports as HDRU publications.

• Continue to develop manuscripts “Negotiating between resource conservation and the public trust on federal reserve lands” and “Introduction to human dimensions considerations in biological resource planning.”

• Implement NPS mail survey (Phase IIIB).

• Continue analysis of Cornell lands survey and present results to decision makers.

• Continue to serve on planning committee for first International Human Dimensions conference, to be held in 2008.

• Participate in “Thinking Like a Manager” writing retreat (Jan).

• Attend HD.gov meeting in DC (Feb).

Dan's additional activities:

• Continue to work with BRMD to develop GWS conference session.

• Relocate to Fort Collins, CO to work with BRMD.

Kirsten's additional activities:

• Continue to serve as elected GPSA representative for DNR.

• Continue analysis of Phase IIIA interview data using qualitative data analysis software (ATLAS.ti).

• Invite review by interviewees and finalize Phase IIIA reports.

• Reformat and submit “Community and Participation” paper to Environmental Management.

• Present research at DNR GSA Symposium (Jan).
