Quarterly Report:

Accomplishments this quarter: (April 1-June 30, 2004)

• April 1-2 Visits to Washington DC: Washington Office and National Capital Region:

• Dan Decker, Kirsten Leong, Mary Foley, and Margaret Wild met with Gary Johnston, Jim Gramann, John Dennis, Mike Soukup, and Jim Sherald and the NCR Team (at CUE) to 1) orient NPS representatives to project and 2 ) orient project’s Contact Team to various branches of NPS.

• Kirsten and Dan met with Bill Porter and Brian Underwood (College of Environmental Science and Forestry, SUNY) re: biological research on deer in parks.

• Attended biennial International Symposium on Society and Resource Management.

• Received Human Subjects approval from Cornell’s University Committee on Human Subjects for Phase I inquiry (semi-structured informal interviews with natural resource managers at parks), to be conducted Summer 2004.

• Began visits with natural resource managers at parks throughout the Northeast and National Capital Region. Parks visited this quarter: Kirsten and Dan: GETT, CATO, DEWA, VAFO, MORR; Kirsten: HOFU, WEFA, CACO, MIMA.

• Continued to receive input on Issue Evolution Model.

• Updated project website: http://www.dnr.cornell.edu/research/deerinparks

Kirsten’s additional accomplishments:

• Began working out of Fort Collins BRMD office for the summer as a SCEP Biologist.

• Met with Dr. Herman Karl of USGS-MIT Science Impact Collaborative.

• Attended NPS NEPA Training.

• Participated in exotic weed removal at WASO-NRPC field day at ROMO.

Dan’s additional accomplishments:

• Continued to work on plan to spend Jan-Mar ’05 with BRMD in Ft. Collins to contribute to progress of the project.

• Visit to Fort Collins BRMD office.

Next quarter plans: (July 1-September 30, 2004)

• Continue to work with BRMD in Ft. Collins.

• Continue with visits to parks in DC area: COLO, FRSP, MANA, PRWI, SHEN, HAFE, ROCR, CHOH, ANTI, MONO

• Attend GIS training: Introduction to ArcGIS for Land Management Agencies.

• Summarize summer park visits in terms of broad themes and experiences, typologies, etc.

• Develop conceptual framework to inform study plan.

• Begin NPS Fundamentals training modules.

• Finalize Issue Evolution Model: possibly submit to George Wright Forum.

• Continue reading NPS literature.

• Continue to update and maintain website.

• Continue to collect information about eastern NPS units with known deer interests.
