Accomplishments this quarter:
(April 1-June 30, 2005)

• Dan:

• Made progress with authors of two papers for NPS sponsored Wildlife Habituation Symposium for the 2005 TWS annual conference.

• Developed abstracts and presentation accepted for 2nd CWD symposium, scheduled for July 2005.

• Assisted Linda Drees and Margaret Wild in planning for a contingency planning workshop, scheduled for September. Identified a workshop facilitator.

• Kirsten:

• Continued interviews with public participation practitioners related to Phase II research.

• Attended alternatives workshop for Deer Management Plan EIS at Catoctin Mountain Park.

• Completed oral A-examinations.

• Began working from BRMD office in Fort Collins, CO on June 6.

• Issue-evolution manuscript submitted to George Wright Forum.

• Proceedings accepted from presentation at The George Wright Society annual meeting.

• Phase I research report published as HDRU publication series 05-5 and distributed to participating NPS units, also available on website: http://www.dnr.cornell.edu/research/deerinparks/HDRU055.pdf

• Recruited NPS units for participation in next phases of research:

• Phase IIIA: in-depth surveys of communities near parks.
Study sites: Fire Island National Seashore, Valley Forge National Historical Park, Prince William Forest Park

• Phase IIIB: mail-back survey of communities near parks.
Study sites: all parks participating in Phase IIIA plus Morristown National Historical Park and Chesapeake & Ohio National Historical Park—Potomac Gorge area.

• Received Human Subjects Approval for Phase IIIA research.

• Submitted OMB application and NPS permit applications for survey research with communities near parks.

• Continued draft of manuscript on the relationship between conception of "community" and approaches to participation.

• Updated project website to reflect study sites and additional details on each study Phase: http://www.dnr.cornell.edu/research/deerinparks/index.asp

Next quarter plans: (July 1-September 30, 2005)

• Dan:

• Work with Margaret to explore human dimensions questions associated with management of CWD and other wildlife diseases.

• Work with several BRMD staff on final details for a symposium on Wildlife Habituation, slated for the TWS 2005 Annual meeting in Madison, WI, including coordinating development of a special section featuring symposium papers for a future issue of Wildlife Society Bulletin.

• Participate in a contingency planning workshop in Ft Collins.

• Kirsten:

• Continue work based out of BRMD office through July 29.

• Conduct preliminary logistics meetings with natural resource management teams at Phase IIIA study sites, July 11- 12.

• Attend internal scoping meeting for Rock Creek Park Deer Management Plan EIS, July 12-15.

• Continue Phase II interviews with public participation practitioners.

• Attend Chronic Wasting Disease Workshop in Syracuse, August 13.

• Begin Phase IIIA research: Fire Island National Seashore.

• Presentation on the relationship between conception of community and approaches to participation at The Wildlife Society Meeting.
