Accomplishments this quarter:
(July 1-September 30, 2005)

• Dan:

• Worked with Margaret to explore human dimensions questions associated with management of CWD and other wildlife diseases. Presented a paper at 2nd CWD Symposium based on wildlife disease management system model from February 2005 wildlife disease management workshop output. The paper was invited to be lead article for a special issue of Human Dimensions of Wildlife journal, and a draft manuscript has been reviewed and is in revision.

• Worked with several BRMD staff on final details for a symposium on Wildlife Habituation, slated for the TWS 2005 Annual meeting in Madison, WI, including coordinating development of a special section featuring symposium papers for a future issue of Wildlife Society Bulletin.

• Assisted in planning for and participated in an invasive species contingency planning workshop sponsored by BRMD in Ft Collins, September 20-22.

• Kirsten:

• Continued working from BRMD office in Fort Collins, CO through July 29.

• Conducted preliminary logistics meetings for Phase IIIA research sites: Fire Island National Seashore, Valley Forge National Historical Park, Prince William Forest Park, July 11-12.

• Attended internal scoping meeting for Deer Management Plan EIS at Rock Creek Park, July 12-15.

• Issue-evolution manuscript accepted to George Wright Forum.

• Received OMB approval and NPS research permits for survey research with communities near parks.

• Attended Chronic Wasting Disease Workshop in Syracuse, August 13.

• Internal NPS review of draft manuscript on the relationship between conception of "community" and approaches to participation.

• Completed Phase IIIA research at Fire Island National Seashore, August 21-September 11.

• Presentation on the relationship between conception of community and approaches to participation at The Wildlife Society Meeting, Madison WI, September 29.

Next quarter plans: (October 1-December 31, 2005)

• Dan:

• Finalize HDW manuscript on wildlife disease management system model.

• Work with authors and WSB editor on preparation of the special section of papers on wildlife habituation.

• Participate in BRMD strategic planning workshop in Ft Collins during December.

• Kirsten:

• Phase IIIA research at Valley Forge National Historical Park Oct 2-22.

• Catoctin Mountain Park Deer Management EIS Round Table (to review public comments, review draft EIS, choose preferred alternative and environmentally preferred alternative) Oct 4-6.

• Phase IIIA research at Prince William Forest Park Oct 23-Nov 13.

• BRMD Native Species Branch Strategic Plan meeting, Fort Collins, CO, December.

• Analysis of Phase IIIA data (transcribed interviews and participant observation).

• Development and review of Phase IIIB mail survey instrument.

• Apply for Phase IIIB (mail back survey) UCHS human subjects and OMB approval.

• Submit “Community and Participation” manuscript to the Wildlife Society Bulletin.

• Continue to develop manuscripts: “Deer management—a wicked/wild wildlife problem,” “Negotiating between resource conservation and the public trust on federal reserve lands,” and “Toward a theory of coorientation to inform public engagement strategies”

• Continue to contribute to Society for Human Ecology and CWD Disease Model manuscripts.
