Accomplishments this quarter:
(July 1-September 30, 2006)

• Completed draft reports from Phase IIIA research for Fire Island National Seashore and Valley Forge National Historical Park.

• Submitted manuscript “Expanding problem frames as a way to resolve human-wildlife conflicts in urban-proximate parks” for consideration for publication in the special issue of Journal of Park & Recreation Administration on Issues Confronting the Management of Urban-proximate Natural Resource Recreation Areas.

• Modified NPS mail survey instrument for use with Cornell lands and East Hill Communities.

• OMB Notice of Intent for mail survey (Phase IIIB) published in Federal Register.

• Kirsten and Dan participated in the team that assisted Blue Ridge Parkway with wildlife management planning for deer issues: test Situation and Technical Assistance Response Team (START) terdisciplinary approach (with BRMD wildlife health and EQD), August 29-31.

Dan's additional activities:

• Extended summer visit to Acadia National Park to work with natural resource management staff on wildlife issues (deer and beaver); to help establish a “visiting scientist program” associated with the Schoodic Education and Research Center (science and learning center); and to develop research needs assessment (research agenda) for HD of wildlife management. Dan returned to ACAD in September to present oral report regarding SERC development to Park Management Team. He also worked with natural resource managers to develop and present a proposal for a proactive strategy to deal with deer management on MDI.

Kirsten's additional activities:

• Assisted Acadia National Park with wildlife management planning for deer issues, July 17-21.

• Moderated session on Human Dimensions, Conservation Education and Conservation Policy and presented paper “Matching the Forum to the Fuss: the Paradox of Public Participation in Natural Resource Management” at The Wildlife Society meeting, September 23-28.

• Continued processing data collected in Phase IIIA research—interview transcription, reviewing transcribed interviews for accuracy, coding data in ATLAS.ti.

• TA for NTRES 330 Natural Resources Planning and Management.

• Serve as elected GPSA representative for DNR.

• Serve as member of DNR search committee for HD faculty position.

Next quarter plans: (October 1-December 31, 2006)

• Implement mail survey for Cornell lands and surrounding communities.

• Submit OMB proposal and 30-day draft notice of intent for implementation of mail survey instrument after 60-day window closes and public comments are received.

• Continue to develop manuscripts “Negotiating between resource conservation and the public trust on federal reserve lands,” and “Introduction to human dimensions considerations in biological resource planning.”

Dan's additional activities:

• Advise NR Program Center on ideas for questions to propose for the comprehensive public survey.

• Work with BRMD to develop GWS conference session—author or co-author opening paper, co-author HD paper (with Kirsten and ACAD staff), and participate on panel concluding the session.

• Work with ACAD staff on paper describing the deer management and research system for ACAD, and its utility for surfacing and communicating important elements of management.

• Finalize plans for joining BRMD during sabbatical leave, beginning January 2007.

Kirsten's additional activities:

• Continue to TA for NTRES 330 Natural Resources Planning and Management.

• Continue to serve as elected GPSA representative for DNR.

• Continue to serve as member of DNR search committee for HD faculty position.

• Continue analysis of Phase IIIA interview data using qualitative data analysis software (ATLAS.ti).

• Invite review by interviewees and finalize Phase IIIA reports.

• Reformat and submit “Community and Participation” paper to Society and Natural Resources.

• Participate in Human Wildlife Conflict Collaboration.

• Continue to contribute to NPS Chronic Wasting Disease regional EIS discussions.

• Attend Rock Creek Park deer management plan public scoping meetings.

• Continue to create mailing lists, web based survey, and other supporting materials for mail survey to residents of communities near NPS units.
