Accomplishments this quarter--KML, DJD, et al.:
(July 1-September 30, 2007)

• Phase IIIB mail survey and telephone follow-up survey data entered, analysis and report writing initiated.

• Contributed to human dimensions section of Park Science article on deer management lessons learned at Catoctin Mountain Park.

• Conducted “Thinking Like a Manager” workshop for Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to develop capacity in assisting natural resource managers in articulating and analyzing the management environment in which they operate for specific programs (i.e., development of managers’ models—concept maps—that encourages a systematic approach to describing management systems and allows clarity in communication about such systems).

• Manuscript “Expanding problem frames to understand human-wildlife conflicts in urban-proximate parks” accepted for publication in special issue of Journal of Parks and Recreation Administration on urban-proximate parks.

• Manuscript “Matching the Forum to the Fuss: Using Coorientation Contexts to Address the Paradox of Public Participation in Natural Resource Management” accepted for publication in Environmental Practice.

• Continued to revise invited manuscript “Overcoming jurisdictional boundaries through stakeholder engagement and collaborative governance: Lessons learned from white-tailed deer management in the U.S.” for edited book chapter on governance and the differentiated countryside.

• Submitted invited manuscript “What is Wildlife Management?” for edited book chapter on Human Dimensions of Fish and Wildlife Management.

• Presented "Human Dimensions of Wildlife Disease Management: Is Public Regard of Wildlife as a “Resource” Hanging in the Balance? at the 2007 Annual Conference of the Wildlife Disease Association.

• Presented “Human-Wildlife Conflict: The Antithesis of Human-Wildlife Co-existence?” and “Human Dimensions of Wildlife Disease Management in the 21st Century: Is Wildlife “Resource” Management Hanging in the Balance?” at The Wildlife Society annual meeting.

• Members of planning committee for first Int’l Human Dimensions conference (2008).

Dan's additional activities:

• Worked with Margaret Wild to develop material and agenda for a strategic planning workshop for wildlife management and health program.

• Started discussions with coordinator for Schoodic Education and Research Center, Acadia National Park, for visit in summer 2008 to deliver a workshop on impact management and developing a manager’s model (concept map).

• Prepared report for BRMD “Building Capacity for Integrating Human Dimensions into Natural Resource Management in National Parks: A BRMD-centric Perspective.”

Kirsten's additional activities:

• Graduated August 2007.

• Transitioned to Human Dimensions Program Leader position with NPS BRMD.

• Member of NRPC Outreach Technical Advisory Group and BRMD Communications Team.

• Submit “The Tragedy of Becoming Common,” “Coorientation Measurement,” and “Public Participation Practitioner” manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

• Continue to serve as members of planning committee for first International Human Dimensions conference, to be held in 2008.
